In preparation for our Music of Star Wars concert on November 9th at The Michigan Theater, I would like to dive into some of the most intriguing conspiracies about the Star Wars universe. If you are like me and truly cannot wrap your mind around the scope of how deep this universe is, maybe some of these missed connections/theories will help you understand the ins and outs of this pop culture phenomenon.
Darth Vader’s Guilt
A Reddit user posted this on a thread putting together that during the infamous Luke/Darth Vader fight sequence, Darth Vader would have known not just that Luke had a twin sister but who exactly it was; Princess Leia. Darth Vader, earlier in the film, actually holds Princess Leia as a prisoner and knowingly tortures her before destroying her home planet. In the moment where he scans Luke’s mind during their duel, he would have seen that Leia is actually his long lost daughter. The guilt would be too much, and would possibly be a factor in allowing Luke to defeat him in that moment.
That Worm In The Asteroid
One of my favorite scenes from the Star Wars series is when the Millennium Falcon accidentally lands inside of a giant space worm housing itself on an asteroid while trying to escape the Darth Vader militia. A Reddit user posted this, explaining a theory that says this very asteroid may have actually been used as a test subject by the Death Star in its early days. It seems pretty weird to have a giant space worm on a random asteroid, so the theory is that this particular piece of space rock used to be a very active and inhabited planet before the Death Star destroyed it.
Rey is Obi Wan Kenobi’s Granddaughter
Although slightly far fetched, this is a pretty good argument, in my opinion, for the frequently discussed topic of Rey’s identity. Out of all good characters in the universe that have an accent, Rey and Obi Wan have the same. This was done intentionally by the writers because British actors (like John Boyega) act with an American accent. Secondly, there are strong parallels between the visuals of Rey sneaking around the Starkiller Base and Obi Wan sneaking around the Death Star in A New Hope. Lastly, and possibly the strongest pointer, is that during her vision in the basement of Mez’s, Rey hears the voice of Obi Wan calling out to her.
Rey is the Daughter of Han and Leia
Another great theory of the identity of Rey. In the Star Wars novels written before Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Han and Leia have two children. One of these children goes to the dark side, just as Kylo Ren did in the film. This would make sense that the writers of the movie may be modeling the characters after this arc. However, many people don’t buy this because of how a daughter is never mentioned in the film version.
Jar Jar Binks is a Sith.
Jar Jar Binks is my favorite character from the Star Wars universe and I’m not afraid to say it! He is underrated! He might also be a sith. A Reddit user posted this theory, which basically posits that Jar Jar was skillfully trained as a warrior, has the ability to use The Force as persuasion, and was in cahoots with Palpatine. It’s a very long-winded theory, so you can choose to sift through it or just trust me on this one.
