Behind the Music

Join internationally-renowned Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, the UMS Choral Union and music director candidate and Ann Arbor native Jacob Joyce for a sumptuous evening of light, color and grandeur. Michigan-based composer Michael Kropf’s effervescent High Spirits begins the evening, before Robert Schumann’s Adventlied (Advent Songs), Op. 71 for soloists, chorus and orchestra takes center stage. For Schumann, the highest in musical expression is achieved through the chorus and orchestra and his Adventlied is a prime example of an intriguing blend of sacred mystery and secular mysticism. Originally composed for piano in 1874, Modest Mussorgsky’s 10-piece suite Pictures at an Exhibition received an orchestral arrangement from Maurice Ravel in 1922 and this is the version most often performed and recorded today. Depicting a wandering enthusiast taking in varied tableaux, this tribute to Mussorgsky’s close friend and influential Russian artist Viktor Hartmann concludes with a stunning sonic render of the magnificent city gates of Kiev.

BIOGRAPHY

Currently serving his third season as the Associate Conductor of the Indianapolis Symphony, Jacob Joyce, age 28, is quickly gaining recognition as a dynamic and innovative presence on the podium. Joyce appeared with the ISO several times in the ’19-’20 and ’20-’21 seasons, in various classical, education, Happy Hour, and community concerts. In addition, Joyce made his debut with several American orchestras in ’19-’20, including the Detroit, St. Louis, Houston, and Toledo symphonies. For his work in Indianapolis and across the country, Joyce was awarded a Solti Career Assistance Award in 2020.

Joyce previously served as the Conducting Fellow for the Fort Worth Symphony, with whom he collaborates frequently, and has also held positions as the Associate Conductor of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Berkeley College Orchestra, Music Director of the Opera Theater of Yale College, and Cover Conductor of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. An avid promoter of contemporary music, Joyce has conducted several premieres of orchestral and operatic works. Joyce is also an advocate for bringing classical music to new audiences. He is the host and creator of the podcast Attention to Detail: The Classical Music Listening Guide, which provides people of all backgrounds with basic techniques and strategies for listening to classical music. He also works extensively with educators, music teachers, and orchestra directors, providing career advice and instruction to students across the country.

Joyce studied Orchestral Conducting with Hugh Wolff at the New England Conservatory. He has attended the Tanglewood Music Center and the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, where he was awarded the Robert Spano Conducting Prize. Joyce was a semifinalist in the LSO Donatella Flick Conducting Competition, and was also a semifinalist in the Solti International Conducting Competition, where he conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Frankfurt Museums-orchester. Joyce graduated from Yale College in 2014, with a B.A. in Music and Economics. He also received a M.M. in Violin Performance from the Yale School of Music in 2015, studying with Syoko Aki.

As a violinist, Joyce has performed with several orchestras nationwide, and was awarded the Broadus Erle Prize for an Outstanding Violinist at the Yale School of Music. He served as the concertmaster of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, and performed regularly with the Boston Philharmonic and the Atlantic Symphony. He has previously attended the Tanglewood Music Center, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Encore School for Strings.

Motivated and hungry for new experiences, Measha Brueggergosman’s career effortlessly embraces the broadest array of performance platforms and musical styles and genres.

Measha began her career predominantly committed to the art of the song recital and has presented innovative programs at Carnegie Hall, Washington’s Kennedy Center, London’s Wigmore Hall, both the Konzerthaus and Musikverein in Vienna, Madrid’s Teatro Real, as well as at the Schwarzenberg, Edinburgh, Verbier and Bergen Festivals with celebrated collaborative pianists Justus Zeyen, Roger Vignoles, Julius Drake, and Simon Lepper.

On the opera stage, her recent highlights include the roles of Giulietta and Antonia in Les contes d’Hoffmann, Elettra in Idomeneo, Jenny in Weill’s Mahagonny, Emilia Marty in Janáček’s Věc Makropulos, Hannah in Miroslav Srnka’s Make No Noise, and Sister Rose in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking. On the concert platform last season she returned to Carnegie Hall with the New World Symphony, performed Elettra in Idomeneo at Opera Atelier, Toronto, and gave a recital at the Barbican Center, London. She has also recently worked with the Orchestre de Paris, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and New World Symphony Orchestras and conductors such as Daniel Barenboim, Michael Tilson Thomas, Franz Welser-Möst, Sir Andrew Davis, Gustavo Dudamel and Daniel Harding.

Her first recording for Deutsche Grammophon, Surprise, includes works by Schoenberg, Satie and Bolcom and is one of the most highly regarded debut albums of recent years. Her subsequent disc Night and Dreams, which features songs by Mozart, Brahms, Strauss, Schubert, Debussy, Duparc and Fauré won several awards and her recording of the Wesendonck Lieder with Franz Welser-Möst and the Cleveland Orchestra earned her a Grammy nomination.

Off the stage, Measha is just as active: she recently released her memoir “Something Is Always On Fire” published by Harper Collins, she appears regularly on primetime TV (most recently advocating on behalf of contemporary Canadian literature); and leading Canadian children across the country in song, in celebration of the nationwide campaign for music education.
