Young Artist Competition

The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra was founded by young aspiring artists in 1928. In keeping with this tradition of highlighting young talent, young artists will be selected through an annual Young Artist Competition held each season. The 2021 competition winner will perform with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the daytime youth concert on March 24, 2022 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor.

Who’s Eligible?

Students who are in grades 7-12 and reside in or attend schools in the states of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana during school year 2021-2022

Instruments: Strings (violin, viola, cello, and string bass), Woodwinds (flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, and bassoon), Brass (horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba), harp, and percussion. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE

July 1, 2021: Applications begin

October 29, 2021: Applications due by 5 PM EST

November 5, 2021: Finalists announced

December 11, 2021: Live final round

March 24, 2022: Performance with the A2SO at Hill Auditorium

 

APPLICATION process

  1. Please read through the guidelines on this page.
  2. Upload the audition video recording with piano accompaniment to YouTube.
  3. Fill out the application form. (the link will be published below on July 1)
  4. Pay a non-refundable fee of $35 online by credit card. Instructions and a link to the payment page will be provided after the application form is submitted.

FINAL AUDITIONS

Young Artists who are selected as one of the finalists will be notified via email by November 5. Live auditions will be held on December 11, 2021 in Ann Arbor. Finalists will play in alphabetical order by last name. Winners will be announced at the end of live auditions. All finalists must provide their own accompanist. A professional accompanist may be available for an additional fee. More details will be provided to finalists.

Music Selection

Contestants must choose one movement from a concerto or a single movement piece from the standard literature for his or her instrument. Selection to be performed must be a work available for solo instrument and orchestra.

 

Winner

Winner will perform with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the daytime youth concert on March 24, 2022 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Please note that the winner is expected to perform the same piece he/she performed for the final round live auditions and to be available to perform on the date of the performance.
