Young Artist Competition
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra was founded by young aspiring artists in 1928. In keeping with this tradition of highlighting young talent, young artists will be selected through an annual Young Artist Competition held each season. The 2020 competition winner will perform with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the “Music in the Middle” youth concert on November 17, 2020 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor.

Vocalists of all ranges or instrumentalists who play wind, brass, percussion, and string instruments (excluding piano) entering grades K-12 in 2020-2021 the school year.
The application deadline has been extended to 11:59 PM on Tuesday, July 14, 2020 (EDT).

- Fill out the application form. (link below)
- Pay a non-refundable fee of $35 online by credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover). Instructions and a link to the payment page will be provided after the application form is submitted.
Young Artists who are selected as one of the finalists will be notified via email by July 15. Live auditions will be held in early September, 2020 in Ann Arbor. Finalists will play in alphabetical order by last name. Winners will be announced at the end of live auditions. All finalists must provide their own accompanist. A professional accompanist may be available for an additional fee. More details will be provided to finalists.
Contestants shall submit an audition video of up to 10 minutes of a complete concerto movement or solo work with orchestra (unedited, no cuts).If selected to perform, the length of piece may be cut for the performance as needed, at the discretion of the conductor. Selection to be performed must be a work available for solo instrument/voice and orchestra.
Winner will perform with the Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra at the “Music in the Middle” youth concert on November 17, 2020 at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Please note that the winner is expected to perform the same piece he/she performed for the final round live auditions and to be able to perform on the date of the performance.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra reserves the right to not select a winner if no competitor qualifies.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra will not provide any harp or percussion instruments for soloists.
Transportation and lodging are the responsibility of each performer.
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra reserves the right to change or modify the above competition guidelines.
